  1. Question 141

    Find the missing number in the following series. 6, 17, 38, 73, 126, ?
    • (A)198
    • (B)201
    • (C)205
    • (D)209
    • (E)211
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: (B) 201

    Differences between consecutive terms: 17 – 6 = 11, 38 – 17 = 21, 73 – 38 = 35, 126 – 73 = 53. Second differences: 21 – 11 = 10, 35 – 21 = 14, 53 – 35 = 18. These increase by 4 each time. The next second difference is 22, so the next difference is 53 + 22 = 75. Missing number = 126 + 75 = 201.
  2. Question 142

Five start-ups K, L, M, N and O are being evaluated for an incubation programme. Exactly three start-ups must be selected. The following conditions apply: 1. If K is selected, L cannot be selected. 2. M can be selected only if N is selected. 3. Exactly one of L and O must be selected. 4. N and O cannot both be selected. Which of the following combinations can be selected without violating any condition?
    • (A)K, M, N
    • (B)L, M, N
    • (C)K, L, N
    • (D)M, N, O
    • (E)K, N, O
    Show answer and explanation

    Correct answer: (B) L, M, N

    Check each option against the four conditions. (A) K, M, N: neither L nor O is selected, which breaks condition 3 (exactly one of L and O). (B) L, M, N: K is not selected, so condition 1 holds. M is selected along with N (condition 2). Exactly one of L and O is selected - L only (condition 3). N is selected without O (condition 4). All conditions hold. (C) K, L, N: K and L are both selected, which breaks condition 1. (D) M, N, O: N and O are both selected, which breaks condition 4. (E) K, N, O: N and O are both selected, which breaks condition 4. Only (B) works.
